Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist best known for his fantastic designs based on mathematical premises creating optical illusions.
He exploited the ambiguity between figure and foreground, flat pattern and three dimensional recession.
Escher's designs were often executed with a surrealist flair, taking irrational looking subjects and putting them into rational, mathematical patterns.
His compositions vibrate, as the foreground and background seem to trade places at the blink of an eye.
